Arthritis Q&A

What are the types of arthritis?

Arthritis is a family of diseases affecting the joints, bones, and soft tissues. There are more than 100 types. The Pacific Rheumatology Center team treats many arthritis types, including:

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis occurs when cartilage (the rubbery bone cushioning) breaks down gradually. This can cause joint grinding, often leading to stiffness and pain.

Your joints may make extra joint fluid in an attempt to make up for cartilage loss. But, the fluid can accumulate, which causes swelling and makes your symptoms worse.

Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis happens when your immune system attacks your joint lining, causing inflammation and overproduction of joint fluid.

Rheumatoid arthritis can cause pain, stiffness, swelling, and joint damage. It may change the appearance of your joints.

Psoriatic arthritis

Psoriatic arthritis is an autoimmune disease. It affects around 3 in 10 people with psoriasis (a skin condition causing skin cell overproduction and rashes).

With psoriatic arthritis, the immune system attacks joints. It often strikes the hands and feet.

Psoriatic arthritis can cause pain, stiffness, and joint deformity over time.

The team also treats gout, ankylosing spondylitis, and other arthritis types.

When should I see a doctor about my arthritis?

You should seek arthritis treatment when your condition affects your quality of life. Signs you need treatment include:

  • Persistent pain
  • Joint swelling
  • Red joints
  • Warm or hot joints
  • Stiff joints

These problems can disrupt your life. You might avoid stairs, limit standing time, or skip the activities you enjoy. You don’t have to do so anymore. There are new arthritis treatments available for each type of disease.

How does the doctor treat arthritis?

Treatment depends on your type of arthritis and individual needs. The Pacific Rheumatology Center team recommends nonsurgical approaches whenever possible. In most cases, treatments happen in the Tustin or Laguna Hills office. You can go home right after your appointment.

Most patients enjoy symptom relief using methods such as:

  • CBD oil
  • Anti-inflammatory supplements
  • Prescription medications, like Remicade®, Orencia®, Actemra®, and Rituxan®
  • Regenerative medicine, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy
